DJ Jonathan Toubin

This morning I was really saddened to hear the news that dj Jonathan Toubin had been very badly hurt in a freak car accident, while sleeping in a hotel room in Portland. Jonathan is not only one of NYC's best underground dj's, but he also is a very kind soul. I first met him some years ago, and I really enjoyed the 45's he would spin. He was always very friendly when I would go up to the dj booth and talk music with him. Many people in that scene would snub me, as I had a greasy pompadour and a 50's look, not the shaggy hair and tight fitting black pants that were de rigueur.

I was shooting nightclub photos for Paper mag on a regular basis at that time, and always knew that Jonathan would not only have the best music, but the hippest looking rock kids as well..so I started shooting his parties whenever I could. Paper loved the images I would give them, as they were really into the whole 60's-70's rock look that Jonathan's good looking crowd would wear to his events. I was very happy to see his career as a dj progress in the last few years, throwing fun parties all over the US.

These are some of the images of Jonathan that i dug up in my nightclub archives today. Jonathan would always ham it up for my camera, even though I could tell as a photographer that he was somewhat uncomfortable in front of the camera.

i've been photographing the Toilet Boys for the past several years, in and out of the studio. they're a terrific rock band, and have opened for big bands like Kiss & the Red Hot Chili Peppers. lead singer Guy Furrow gives everything on stage, and is always sure to give photographers great shots on stage. guy knows everybody in the rock scene, he's best friends with debbie harry, and hangs out with fun rock-types like LA designer Michael Schmidt and Mudhoney owner Michael Matula. Toilet Boys co-founder Sean Pierce is an incredible guitarist and a really great guy. i took these pics recently when they opened for Buckcherry at the Williamsburg Music Hall....

These fine Liverpool gents are all class when it comes to serving fast&furious rock-n-roll. Eddie Clendening live

my friend Eddie Clendening is not only a very talented musician, but also a very nice guy. i first met eddie years ago in vegas at the VLV. he was a just skinny young kid from denver when i first asked to take his portrait. when i saw him on stage, however, i was really blown away by his talent at such a young age. since then, i've been following eddie around local nyc gigs with my camera for the past year. he's a great subject matter and always gives his all when on stage. here are some of my favorite images that i've acquired of eddie and his amazing backup band The Blue Ribbon Boys. he really is quite the entertainer, you should check him out if ever given the opportunity. btw, eddie also played Elvis in the Million Dollar Quartet on Broadway, which is a major accomplishment. a big thank you to his management team of daniel irons and brian donnelly for always accommodating me. keep an eye for his website coming soon...

thee lovely lady starlight...i first met her some years back when she was go-go dancing at a motherfucker party at limelight. starlight had bright orange hair, in a glam ziggy stardust style, and wore glitter makeup. over they years she has blossomed into a beautiful lady, and not only tours spinning for her good friend lady gaga, but also spins for big metal/rock festivals around the world. way to go starlight!!!

Hail Caezars!!! The Caezars are my favorite new band. they're young and talented, the new/next wave in rockabilly. these UK lads have only been together for 2 years, and i hear they aren't even of legal age. the young girls loved them at the show in vegas, it felt like it was the second coming of the beatles. they have a bit of a snotty, cocky attitude on stage...and it really works, as they have the talent to back them up. the lead singer reminded me of a young johnny rotten from the sex pistols. i love that they give everything on stage, as it makes for an amazing show, and as a photographer, great pics! i met a few of them at viva and they're really polite, nice guys. they'll definitely have a crossover effect on the mainstream, and you'll see their pics in all of the fashion/music mags as the "next" big thing. buy their new CD on Wild Records!

i love this band The Desperados. they're an LA based 50's rock-n-roll group on the Wild Records label. Wild Records seems to have all the hot new rockabilly bands. The Desperados had an energetic show at vlv this year. they're raw young talent and really fun to watch on stage! i look forward to seeing them again at vlv 15...

Cash O'Riley

Cash O'Riley is an amazing musician. i was lucky enough to catch his raw performance at vlv14. with dishelved looks, his early style of rock-n-roll is reminiscent to me of watching a young hasil adkins or link wray. Cash had some problems with his guitar, but was able to pull through and did an angry version of "I Love Rock-n-Roll" to please his fans. don't miss him if he comes your way. i hope he makes it to nyc one day so that i can see him perform and take more pictures...

The Reverend Horton Heat

some pics i took of the Reverend Horton Heat at the belle house in brooklyn this past weekend. i've seen this band so many times over the years, but for some odd reason this is the first time that i took pics of the band (they've been playing for 25 years!) Jimbo, the upright bass player in the band, introduced himself to me after the show. he's a really nice guy and you can tell that he not only loves the music he plays, but the fans as well. he took time to meet the fans after the show, sign autographs and have his pic taken with them. he's very down-to-earth...a really great guy.

I took these pics for The Beauty Bar Calendar 2007 in Las Vegas. the owner was not totally happy with the outcome, as he said that they were not "pin-up" enough and animated. however, I took my cue from one of my favorite photographers, the legendary Bunny Yeager who photographed a lot of early Playboy models in the 50's & early 60's...and kept it playful, yet subdued. These were not professional models, but girls (most who had never modeled) that had won their local Beauty Bar drop dead gorgeous pageants. I think they did a great job.
